What Does The Following Ultrasound Report Indicate?

A month ago I had an ultrasound on my thyriod. They detected a small hypoechoic thyriod nodule in the lower pole of my right lobe, measuring 8.7mm x 7mm. It contains no internal calcification. No significant increase in flow on colour dipper exam. The rest of the lobe appeared unremarkable. My doctor suggested I wait 6 months before undertaking this procedure again. And a needle biopsy. Why would he want me to wait 6 months? Since then, a month later... for the past few days my glands seem very swollen, Howver i do not appear to be unwell. Apart from being foggy, having minor (apart from today some major) dizzy spells and my inflamed glands. What is wrong with me? What should I do?

Hi,

Noted the Ultrasound report showing small hypoechoeic nodule in lower pole of right lobe, Doctor asked to have review scan after 6 months and now you have developed swollen glands and spells of dizziness.

Your concerns are absolutely right. The chance of cancer has to be ruled out. Since you glands are also swollen I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult your Doctor again for clinical evaluation, examination and get the investigations of blood. FNAC that is fine needle aspiration cytology of the thyroid and the swollen glands may give a proper diagnosis and biopsy may be required if FNAC is not confirmatory.

Medical management with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications will help for the swollen gland. Dizziness should be clinically evaluated and investigated to get treated as per the cause found.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
