Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 33yr old female that just received back health screening results from work. I found that my ALT level is 53. Should I be concerned. Can you provide possible reasoning? My AST level was within normal range as were my bilirubin levels. Actually everything else they tested for was normal except MCHC was slightly low. Thoughts?
Hi, Thank you for posting in HealthCareMagic. I understand your concern. ALT is 'aspartate transaminase' and one of the enzymes estimated to know liver dysfunction. Its normal range is 7 to 35 U/L in females. If other parameters related to liver function is normal, then you need not worry about its levels of 53 U/L. This could indicate mild liver dysfunction, probably caused due to intake of certain drugs like paracetamol or oral contraceptive pills. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is a measure of the concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of packed red blood cells. MCHC is decreased in microcytic hypochromic anemia, commonly due to iron deficiency or hemopoietic vitamins like Vitamin B12 and Folic acid. Kindly do a follow-up repeat of ALT levels after 3 months. You may take iron along with folic acid tablets to correct your hemoglobin concentration. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
