Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 74 year old male 6ft 200 lbs in reasonably good health non smoker or drinker vegetarian. Recently I was told my blood pressure was too high today I measured it at 143/90 with the third number 94. What should it be and do you have any advice. Thanks. Will
Thank you for your question. At your age, BP below 140/90 would be considered satisfactory. Since you have a borderline high reading according to your question, it would be prudent for you to initiate a few lifestyle changes initially. Since your BP reading when you were informed that it is too high has not been provided in he question I am assuming it was higher than 140/90. The first thing you could try, is losing a little weight. 200 pounds for a 6 ft person is a little on the higher side. You should limit your daily intake of normal table salt (ideally no added salt to your food ). Daily exercise or atleast 4 to 5 times a week, along with a healthy diet would also help bring down your BP. You can keep a note of your BP readings and if they are persistently high you can approach your physician to take a decision on starting medicines for the raised BP. I hope this helps you.
