I had a CT scan of my abdomen and got these two things in the Last Impression and I have no idea what they mean. PELVIS: 2.3 cm peripherally enhancing follicle in the right ovary. Small simple density fluid in the cup-de-sac and right lower abdomen. Kidneys: bilateral duplicated renal collecting system

Hi,

It's important to note that the interpretation of a CT scan should be done by a qualified medical professional who has access to your complete medical history and can correlate the findings with your symptoms.

Peripherally enhancing follicle in the right ovary: This finding suggests the presence of a fluid-filled sac or cyst in the right ovary that is showing enhancement, which may indicate an active or functional ovarian follicle. Ovarian follicles are a normal part of the menstrual cycle, and they typically resolve on their own. However, further evaluation by a gynecologist may be necessary to determine the significance of this finding about your symptoms and medical history.

Small simple density fluid in the cul-de-sac and right lower abdomen: This refers to the presence of a small amount of fluid in the cul-de-sac (a pouch-like area in the pelvis) and the right lower abdomen. Simple fluid density typically indicates the presence of fluid without any significant abnormalities. The cause of this fluid accumulation may vary and can range from a normal physiological response to inflammation or other conditions. Further evaluation and correlation with your symptoms are needed to determine the underlying cause.

Bilateral duplicated renal collecting system: This finding suggests that the urinary collecting system in both kidneys has duplicated structures. Normally, the collecting system consists of the renal pelvis, ureters, and bladder. The duplicated renal collecting system is a congenital anomaly where there is an additional branching of the renal pelvis, resulting in duplicate or bifid ureters.

This condition is usually asymptomatic and does not typically require treatment unless it causes urinary tract problems or complications. It's important to discuss these findings with your healthcare provider who ordered the CT scan. They will be able to provide you with a detailed explanation of the results, their significance, and any further steps that may be necessary.
