My mother is 68 years old and she just had a CT Scan which say she has chronic bilateral hypertrophyc polypoid ethmoidal and left maxillary sinusitis. What exact does that means? does she need surgery? Thank you very much regards Lydia Charlie Seychelles YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per this CT scan report she is having chronic sinusitis, which is nothing but an inflammation of paranasal sinuses (air filled cavities in the skull).

Most cases managed with conservative management with antibiotics and nasals decongestant drops. Steam inhalation is also helpful to open up clogged sinuses and will provide symptomatic relief.

In severe cases surgical intervention may be needed. You can opt for newer techniques like FESS( functional endoscopic sinus surgery).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
