Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 3 month old had an MRI to see if there was any damage to the brain to see if there could be a cause for a movement disorder. His MRI stated: There is mild prominence of CSF spaces, and some minimal atrophy cannot be excluded. What does this mean? History: While in utero he suddenly stopped moving at 37 weeks 3 days. He did not get taken out until 38 weeks. He was taken out due to not moving much and having his heart fluctuate from 140s up to high 180s. His movements are twisting jerky movements of his arms and shoulders. Along with stiffening of arms and legs. His head also tends to turn from side to side uncontrollably. He also uses right arm and leg more than left arm and leg.
The MRI report with narrated history may be sign of grave cerebral event in form of possible intraventricular hemorrhage in utero life or during birth event most likely. The atrophy is secondary to the compromised blood supply during the hemorrhage period. There are various neurologic sequences depending upon the area of the brain involved with the pathology. However, a detailed neurologic examination of infant is mandatory to discuss the possible outlines of management and prognosis in this regard.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
