Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband, 60 years old, has had an MRI which shows few left frontal chronic ischaemic foci. Rest of brain parenchyma is normal . Could you tell me how serious this is and possible treatment options? He has no blood pressure, no diabetes, but had a history of alcoholism, has had a multiple bypass ten years ago, is active, carries too much weight on his abdomen.
I read your question carefully and I understand yourr concern.
Those changes are due to ischemic changes which happen gradually in many people with the advancing of age. As such if in mild quantity they do not represent a cause for major concern. Considering your husbands history of multiple bypass it was to be expected that some changes would be present in other areas, heart vessels after all are part of the vascular system as well as the brain ones. I suppose he is already under treatment with a blood thinning product like apirin anda statin. That would also be the best treatment to slow down the changes in the brain vessels as well.
I hope to have been of help.
