What Does This MRI Test Result For Spine Indicate?

I had MRI last saturday and i got the result this morning my PCP refer me the a specialist. At the end this is what is says on the findings.Impression:Lumbar spine degenerative changes most significant at L4-5 with mild diffuse disc bulge, small annular scar, severe facet arthropathy and severe ligament flavum hypertrophy. There is associated moderate central canal stenosi to 5mm,mild to moderate left and mild right lateral recess impingement.Additional multilevel degenerative changes are more mild but significant neurologis impingement. What does it means? what are the treatment for that? I am waiting for the specialist to call me to schedule an appointment. I just want to know if that is bad or not?

Hi,

Basically the report says that there is significant degenerative changes(osteoarthritis) in the lower vertebra.

This caused changes in surrounding ligament, and bulging of intervertebral disc(the disc between two vertebral bones), resulting in narrowing of spinal canal and pressure on nerves exiting the spinal cord.

Such changes can cause lower back pain and numbness or weakness of lower limbs. Treatment depends on severity of symptoms and objective findings on examination.

This may need surgical intervention if pain is sever or there is weakness of leg muscles on examination. The specialist will discuss you in detail.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK
