What Does This Blood Test Report Indicate?

Hi. I recently had blood work done when I went in to see my PCP for a persistent cough and was diagnosed with bronchitis. My ALT came back at 78, my AST at 42, and my triglycerides at 438. I smoke and drank at a significant rate for a large part of my 20 s. I am now 34. How worried should I be with these results? Thank you for your opinion in this matter.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
ALT and AST levels are not connected with your persistent cough and bronchitis. Respiratory cause is mainly due to infection.
ALT and AST are liver enzymes.
ALT level shows slightly higher than two fold increase and AST level is marginally increased. It indicates liver cell damage, particularly because of alcohol induced toxic effect on liver.
Your triglycerides of 438 mg/dl is extremely high, indicating dyslipidemia. This could be also due to your alcohol intake in the past. High triglycerides could get involved in coronary artery disease.
Hence, kindly stop completely alcohol intake. Eat healthy and fat free foods.
Exercise regularly.
Check the enzymes and triglyceride levels once again after 3 months.
It must show a decreasing trend towards normal. You can continue with the good habits and that should keep yourself healthy.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
