What Does This Blood Test Result For Diabetes Indicate?
My wife is 50 years old 5 5 115 lbs. We workout six days a week (these workouts don t include our walks or bike rides). She just got her blood work back and her a1c is 5.7, while her glucose is 79. Does this mean that she is pre diabetic or can something like fatigue or dehydration affect her results?
Hello dear Understand your concern Do not worry. Report is completely normal. Following are the diagnosis criteria for Diabetes: Hb1ac : >= 6.5 percent Fasting blood glucose : >=126 mg/dl. (on two occasion) Post parandial blood glucose (2 hour after meal):>=200 mg/dl Prediabetes: Fasting blood glucose- between 110 to 125 mg /dl.
So you have complete normal report. Fatigue and dehydration can affcet the glucose report some time. But it does not affect the Hb1ac report. It tells about the previous three month glucose status and it is gold standard if done by HPLC method.
I advice you to repeat the fasting blood glucose (10-12 hours fasting) in NABL accredited laboratory. Repeat the Hb1ac after 3 months. Do regular exercise 45-60 minutes in the morning. Hope this may hep you Best regards Dr. Sagar
