What Does This Blood Test Result Indicate?

Hi my husband got the result from Our blood works result in application for our whole life insurance stating that he was positive in exposure of Hepa B, his Hbsag was positive. What does this mean does he need to consult a physician right away and does it curable? And if so, are we at risk to get infected because we have a 6yr. Old son? But me and my son had hepa b vaccine before though.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositivity indicates the presence of hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection.

It indicates either an acute or chronic infection. You say that your husband has new positive then it means he has acute infection of HBV.

Hepatitis B virus primarily interferes with the functions of the liver by replicating in liver cells. It might at later stage lead to cirrhosis of liver and hepatocellular carcinoma if untreated but only in 5 to 10% individuals.

You should look for HBV dna quantitative test and liver function tests. These test are required to look for the status of virus and its any effect on liver.

In 95% of people with positive HBsAg, virus remains in silent phase but in remaining 5% this may progress to effect on liver. And hence monitoring of your values are required once in every 6 months.

Transmission of hepatitis B virus results from exposure to infectious blood or body fluids containing blood. Possible forms of transmission include sexual contact, blood transfusions, re-use of contaminated needles & syringes.

So,you and your son might have high risk of developing hepatitis infection but as you said you both had taken vaccines then there is no need to be worried.

I request you to please visit a physician for evaluation.

You may need few relevant tests and treatment of your condition is entailed. Kindly do not ignore or neglect this infection.

Regards,
