What Does This Brain MRI Test Result For Chronic Depression Indicate?

My son began with depression during middle school with various levels of control vs auditory hallucinations and anger. He is now 30 and is having severe depression. He sees a counselor and psychiatric NP, however never tells anyone everything. He had an MRI and has an area of the frontal lobe that looks like swiss cheese, or bone marrow with large holes. What could that MRI image mean?
