What Does This Cholesterol Report Results Indicate?

Hi My cholestrol report is as follows.Cholesterol (Total)
( CHOD - PAP 240 mg/dl
Triglycerides
( GPO )     200 mg/dl
HDL Cholesterol (Good Cholesterol)
( Direct )     42 mg/dl
LDL Cholesterol (Bad Cholesterol)
( Direct )     153 mg/dl
VLDL
( Calculation )     40 mg/dl
Cholesterol / HDL Ratio
( Calculation )     5.7

Total lipid recommendations for someone without heart disease:
Triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood, not cholesterol)Maintain less than 150
LDL-C: maintain below 100
HDL-C: maintain above 50

So, essentially, your lipids appear elevated and according to the American Diabetes Association, to normalize these lipids the following is recommended:
Reduce saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol intake
Increase omega-3, viscous fiber(like oats,fruit),plant stenols/sterols
Weight loss if indicated
increased exercise
The doctor may recommend statin therapy

I didn't comment on the total cholesterol because treatment focus is now more on other parameters, but it is high at 240. I hope this answered your questions. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
