What Does This Diagnosis For Heart Functioning Indicate While On Kidney Dialysis?

my dad is 84 an award winning athlete in his youth. He has been on kidney dialysis since the end of october. He fell and hit his head two weeks ago, cat scan good some confusion after but back to normal since. He collapsed march 16 and has been in the hospital since. Doctors told us his heart is at 20 percent we dont know what that means he hasnt had a heart attack that we know of. is there hope for our dad?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI
The 20% is referring to ejection fraction--a measure of how much blood the heart pumps out with each beat.

The normal ejection fraction is over 50%, so his heart is weak and it may be because he's had a heart attack in the past or that he has congestive heart failure

This can be treated with medications so there is hope for him
