What Does This Result Of EEG For Grand-mal Seizures Indicate?
Dear doctor,A close relative of mine has had grand-mal seizures, with post-ictal confusion, todd s pareisis in the right foot, wide open eyes during the seizure, and an EEG showing focal discharges in their right temporal lobe. The MRI was normal. Could this be caused by stress and trauma? i.e., is this psychogenic or physiological?Thank you.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. EEG is usually advised in patients to find out focus of origin of seizures. His MRI was normal so any serious cause of seizures has been ruled out. He has seizure focus in temporal lobe and this means that electric discharges in brain are originating through this area. Brain trauma could be the cause of seizures but evaluation is needed. Some times excess mental or physical stress results in lowering of seizure threshold and thus individuals develop seizures. If its psychogenic or physiological cant be predicted based upon the history you have mentioned. Please take him to a good neuro-psychiatrist for evaluation and treatment.
Anti seizure drugs like Sodium Valproate, Phenytoin etc are commonly used for seizures. Visit a psychiatrist for help. Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
