What Does This Spinal MRI Result For Sharp Headache While Treating Migraine Indicate?

Hi there, I feel I am quite a complex case but here goes. I ve suffered from migraines since I was 15, I m now 52 and over the last 10 years in particular the symptoms have changed. I am under a neurologist but he is just treating migraine symptoms even though I have told him they have changed dramatically. The original symptoms were just classic migraine that was cured by imigran. However its now more nerve pain and every day since around February this year. I get pins and needles, numbness and a piercing pain like someone is putting an ice cold knife in my head. It becomes so extreme that it wakes me several times at night sometimes and the only way I can stop it is to hold me head up against the bedhead until it subsides. I am booked in for a C spine MRI next week as I previously had one about 6 years ago and it did show a slight bulge at c6-c7 and a small haemangioma, so I am keen to find out if that is causing the problem. I also suffer from high blood pressure and it was generally around 145/95, however yesterday when taken it was 101/67 which is a dramatic drop and I think attributed to the Inderal and atacand I am prescribed. This morning it was 140/76 when I didn t take my doseage from last night and this morning. The pain was wearing me down so much and I couldn t get in to see my neurologist so I saw a GP who prescribed pregabalin which I have now been taking for a week and haven t really noticed much difference at all. I am so frustrated as I have been a regular gym goer and really haven t been able to go for 3 weeks now because my head is so woozy and I m about to become a grandmother any day now so I desperately want the pain to stop. Any ideas?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The slight bulge and hemangioma at C 6 and C 7 level may be giving peripheral symptoms at level of upper limb including that of arm, forearm and hands in terms of tingling, numbness or neurologic features. The head symptoms co relate with the migraine altering the neuro-chemical transmitters and other tracts dysfunction rather than C6 relation.

So far as the blood pressure measures are concerned, they are being pretty fair under control so far as your age is concerned. Do continue your regular exercise, medications and follow up regularly with your ortho surgeon for evaluation and need of any particular intervention over a period of time.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
