What Does This Ultra Scan Finding Indicate?

My 1.8 months old son has been affected by UTI. While we did the Ultrascan, the resul have come mild fullness of left pelvic cay earl system . Our paediatrician has suggested antibiotics amikacin 200 mg for next 7 days and told he will be alright. My worry is that is normal or I have pay lot of attention. Then how to prevent permanently UTI. Sharmila.v

Hi,
Fullness of Left pelvicalyceal system it indicates back pressure changes in left kidney. That means there may be some obstruction to the flow of urine from left kidney to urinary bladder (urine bag).
Though similar changes may occur in infection. If there are recurrent urinary tract infections then there will be further evaluation for the possibility of obstruction.
Following investigation may be helpful.

1) complete blood count.
2) Urine Examination with urine culture and sensitivity.
3) Kidney function test.
4) Micturating cystourethrogram - It will be helpful in diagnosis of

*Posterior urethral valves (structural defect in urethra) but in this case back pressure changes occur in both kidneys.

*Vesico ureteric reflux - reverse flow of urine from urinary bladder to ureter( tube connecting kidney to bladder)

If above conditions are diagnosed then there may be need of surgical intervention. For same you might need to consult urosurgeon.

Till that continue animating.
