Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
An ultrasound has just revealed liver diffusely echogenic and hepatic steatosis . I gather that is some kind of fatty liver (non-alcoholic). I am 5 7.5, 130 lbs, 73 years old and follow a pretty clean diet: no grains/sugars. I consume about 2 tbs MCT oil/coconut oil daily, occasional flax oil, olive oil, no heavy fatty foods or fried foods. I exercise daily about 30-40 min trail run and occasional swim about 30-45min. Can you tell me what I am doing or not doing to create this condition and what I should do about it. (My mother had hepatitis in the 50 s so I don t associate a letter w it. However it was chronic and consumed her for at least 5 years before she died a week after surgery on a blood clot).
The given ultrasound suggestive of fatty liver and it could be a non alcoholic disease. Consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated. You have to do a liver function test to assess the functional status. In most cases it will resolve with conservative management and only observation and follow up is required.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
