What Does This Ultrasound Report Mean?

Ultrasound Result: I have bulky inhomogeneous thyroid. R/O nodule. Fullness of right parotid region. Previouslt I had a right hemidectomy. The right lobe remnant of the thyroid measures 1.6 x 0.8 x1.2 cm. The left lobe of the thyroid measures 5.2 x 2.1 x 2.3 cm and has a mildly, non-homogeneous internal echo pattern. The isthmus measures 0.3 cm in AP thickness The right parotid gland meansures 6.6 x 4.0 x 1.9 cm and has a homogeneous internal echo pattern. The left parotid gland measures 5.5 x 4.0 x 2.0 cm and has a homogeneous internal echo pattern. Several normal appearing lymph nodes are seen in the parotid glands. The largest measure 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.5 cm (right) and 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.6 cm (left) The submandibular glands appear unremarkable bilaterally. My blood levels are normal. Please can you help me understand why my thyroid gland is bulky. Do i have to be concerned? What is paratid gland? Is it different from thyroid gland. Thank you very much for your guidance.

Hi,

Parotid gland is a salivary gland which is on the side of the face bilaterally in front of the ears. If the parotid gland get inflamed because of some infection then it can give such an impression on Ultrasound. It should be treated conservatively but if the condition does not improve then a CT scan would be needed to rule out a bigger pathology. You have not mentioned the indication for hemithyroidectomy and what was the biopsy result that information would give more insight.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shubir Walter Abraham, General & Family Physician
