Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
The following things can be inferred based on the
ultrasound report you have furnished.
Although there is a singe fetus which is active with the presentation lower down and adequate fluid surrounding, the
gestational age is about 2 weeks shorter than as determined by ultrasound as compared to the calculations done by last menstrual period (LMP).
At 31 weeks, the fetal weight should have been 1502 grams, which is about 250 grams less in your case with 1349 grams.
Hence, the impression is stated as 'intra-uterine growth retardation' (
IUGR).
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) refers to a condition in which an unborn baby is smaller than it should be because it is not growing at a normal rate inside the womb. Delayed growth puts the baby at risk of certain health problems during
pregnancy, delivery and after birth. They include:
1. Low birth weight
2. Difficulty handling the stresses of vaginal delivery
3. Decreased
oxygen levels
4. Low blood sugar
5. Low resistance to infection
6. Low
Apgar scores and
Meconium aspiration, which can lead to breathing problems
7. Trouble maintaining body temperature
8. Long-term growth problems.
In the most severe cases, IUGR can lead to stillbirth.
Management of IUGR depends on the severity of growth restriction and how early the problem began in the pregnancy.
Careful monitoring of a fetus, using tests such as ultrasound, Doppler flow, and fetal monitoring are necessary.
Although it is not possible to completely reverse IUGR, the following may help slow or minimize the effects.
1. Improving maternal nutrition
2. Bed rest
Kindly consult your doctor for appropriate evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
