What Does This Ultrasound Report Results Indicate?

This is my ultrasound report: 1.4-cm left upper pole lesion which is partially cystic but also with an internal prominently echogenic region, although without associated posterior shadowing to suggest calcification. This may relate to proteinaceous or hemorrhagic material suggesting complicated cyst/cystic lesion --I had a CT scan eight months ago and the lesion hasn t changed size. Can I wait a year and monitor, or should I get an MRI now?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

The problem area is small at 1.4 cm and if it was the same 8 months back then there is no need to get a MRI done immediately. Right now it shows some amount of fluid component and this can be rich in protein material or blood. This indicates a complex cyst but since there is no growth, it can be totally benign. There is no calcification in the cyst and this rules out certain other conditions. The best thing to do is wait for 6 months and get ultrasound scan repeated to know any changes in size and appearance.
