What Does This Ultrasound Scan Finding Indicate?

I went for my first ultrasound today and was told they found a yolk sack but no fetal pole or heartbeat. I have only had a blood test and was told I am pregnant and had an hcg level of 34,000. They are talking D&C now if next weeks ultrasound shows no fetal pole or heartbeat is this normal

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

This is a case of blighted ovum where fertilized egg fails to become an embryo. Most of the time there is no known cause but it could be due to chromosomal abnormality. There is no heart beat so no viable pregnancy so termination is the only option in this case. I would advise not to worry at all for present pregnancy and you should go with your doctor's decision.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Abdul Hamid Mavli, General & Family Physician
