What Does This Ultrasound Test Result For Kidney Indicate?

Had an ultrasound perfromed (retroperitoneal, complete) Findings: Right kidney measures 9.3 cm in length and demonstrates an echogenic renal parenchyma,Left kidney measurs 9.5cm and also demonstrates an echogenic renal parenchyma, No mass or hydronephrosis Please clarify what echogenic renal parenchyma means and should I be concerned.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Depending on which axis the doctor used to obtain images, the sonographic shape of the kidney will change. On longitudinal view, the kidney will appear football-shaped and will typically be 9-12 cm in length and 4-5 cm in width (normally within 2 cm of each other). On transverse view, the kidney appears C-shaped. So, regarding the dimensions they are within the normal range.

Parenchyma is the functional part of an organ. In your case, parenchyma is the kidney. Echogenicity means ability to produce an echo. So parenchymal echogenicity means the ability of the kidney to produce an echo.

Your ultrasound result is normal, so you should not be concerned.
