What Does This Vitamin B12 Result Indicate?

Hi, my Vitamin B12 results came back high at 1916, I asked my GI and he said high b12 results are never to worry about though I read online that it could mean liver disease or cancer and I am really concerned as I do have inflammation of the colon and pain and distended abdomen and a whole bunch of other symptoms. And my naturopathic Dr. says I need B12 injections, that doesn t make sense to me as it is already high.

Hello,

If you were taking B12 supplements, particularly the parenteral forms, then having a high B12 level is absolutely justified. Otherwise, there is indeed some concern about various disorders. The problem is that a high B12 level is not a specific marker of disease and cannot be used diagnostically.

It's only an indicator that something might be wrong. If you don't have other indications of disease (other symptoms or findings) then I suppose there is nothing to investigate.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
