What Does Ultrasound Showing Enlarged Left Ovary With Follicle In It Suggest?
Dear doctors, I have just received my first pelvic US result today but I still need to wait to see my GP. I would like to ask if the result shown below is normal and nothing to worry about. (My scan was done on my 10th period day - 11 April 2015, i am 33 yrs old and never had children.) The uterus is anteverted and normal in size (27 cc). The myometrium demonstrates homogeneous echogenicity and no focal uterine lesion is seen. The endometrium measures 5.1 mm and there is no evidence of endometrial thickening seen. The right ovary has a volume of 4.8 cc and is normal in appearance. The left ovary is enlarged and has a volume of 15.5 cc. There is a 2.2cm dominant follicle noted within the left ovary. No ovarian pathology is demonstrated. No adnexal masses are seen. No free fluid is demonstrated within the pelvis. Thank you so much, doctors. Ann
General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Based on the ultrasound report you provided, the findings suggest that your uterus, right ovary, and endometrium appear normal. However, there is an enlarged left ovary with a dominant follicle measuring 2.2 cm.
An enlarged ovary can be caused by several factors such as ovulation, cysts, or tumors. However, in this case, the presence of a dominant follicle suggests that it is a normal physiological finding as the dominant follicle is responsible for ovulation.
It is important to follow up with your GP to discuss the results of your ultrasound and address any concerns you may have. Your GP may recommend a follow-up ultrasound in the future to monitor the growth of the dominant follicle or suggest further testing if necessary.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
