What Does White Thick Discharge From Catheter Indicate?

Hi, my husband is an ms patient with a neurogenic bladder and has had a supra public catheter for at least 5 years. He has been discharging a white, thick substance through the catheter and penis for the past 2 weeks. Additionally, he has been wetting the bed and soiling himself overnight for the same amount of time 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. He is under the care of a medical team through the VA as he is a disabled veteran with an R-2 rating. The VA nurse practitioner tell us that the problem with the white substance is age and the symptoms of the advanced stages of the MS and has recommended that I irrigate the bladder on a regular basis. I feel they should investigate the matter more thoroughly because irrigating the bladder is not resolving the problem at all. Something is plugging up the catheter. Is there any way you can help?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The white discharge from the catheter may be part of various problems such as:
- Paracatheter leak
- Smegma collection beneath foreskin
- Urinary tract infection
- Kidney problems from UTI or systemic issues
- Diabetes flare
- Catheter induced conditions

However, a culture report of the white stuff with urine culture are best possible measures to control the incidence very fast way. Along with above:
- Mmaintain hydration with plenty of liquids
- Control of blood sugar
- Take foreskin back with proper cleansing by hygienic care with antiseptic liquid or soap
- Proper course of antibiotics to control the bacterial and fungal infection

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
