What Else Can I Do Besides Talking For Hoarse Voice After Being Diagnosed With Nodules?

I was diagnosed with nodules/polyps about 14 years ago. I am a teacher, coach, and mother and have over used my voice with my larger class sizes, supporting athletes during games, and calling for my dog. I have a new dog that runs away. I hurt my voice again and have had a very hoarse voice since Christmas. I am going to the doctor Friday; however, what can I do in the meantime besides not talk? Hot liquids or cold drinks? Anything to help?

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding treatment of hoarseness of voice, as you said that you were diagnosed as having vocal nodule about 20 years back.

Since you are having hoarseness of voice for quite a long time and you are in teaching profession as a coach in games, therefore it is possible that you may be having vocal cord thickening as well.

According to your clinical history there are possibilities of-

1- Vocal cord thickening.

2- Vocal nodule.

3- Vocal polyp.

Among above vocal cord thickening and vocal nodule are reversible with conservative treatment by

a- Avoidance of voice abuse.

b- Speech therapy.

c- Steam inhalation.

d- Decongestant.

e- Anti histaminic.

But if anybody is having vocal polyp than Micro Laryngeal Surgery is the only way of treatment.

Regards.
