What Factor Relates Low BP, Higher Heartbeat Rate, And Swelling Of Legs?

Hi I m a 25 yr old female. I ve always had perfect blood pressure readings but my heart rate has always ran high. Last month I had some anxiety attacks and was very stressed and had high blood pressure, then both feet swelled very very bad and when I touched them it would leave an indention; also was very painful especially around the ankles. After 12 days of this I took some water pills and my feet went back to normal 3 days later (and the stressful situation that brought on my anxiety attacks was also no longer an issue) Yesterday I was slurring and dozing off while talking and sitting with my grandmother and then she noticed my feet AND hands were all swollen. She took my blood pressure and it was 90/48 and stayed around that all day. I feel very tired still, lightheaded, and like my mind is cloudy (if that makes sense). 2 hours ago my blood pressure was 100/58 and heart rate 74. But my heart rate ALWAYS runs at least 110 but normally 115-125 sitting. My dr has just always said I had a fast heartrate. What do I do about all the swelling and the low blood pressure? The Dr prescribed me some lasix last month in case I swelled again but that was when I had high blood pressure and this time it s low. And what causes low blood pressure?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

History of low blood pressure with fast heartbeats (tachycardia) is usually the symptom of Sinus Tachycardia, Atrial Fibrillation or Ventricular Tachycardia.

Swelling of the legs/feet is indicative of anemia or hypothyroidism(causes fluid retention) but it can also be due to liver or kidney disease.

You are recommended to have a thorough medical check-up to rule out the pathology causing the discomfort.

Get CBC, Urinalysis, Ecg, Echo, X-Ray chest, LFT, Stress test done to evaluate the cause of tachycardia. In the meantime do regular exercise & stay away from oily spicy junk food.

Take iron & calcium-rich food, Get Thyroid function tests done, to rule out thyroid dysfunction. Stay well hydrated. Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
