Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have slightly high cholesterol: 219. My doctor told me to cut out a lot of my carbs. I've been looking at cholesterol content in all my foods & making the bulk of my meals have been salads. I'm just wondering if the looking at cholesterol % on food is the right way to calculate my cholesterol in take? Should I avoid potatoes & bagels? My doctor had said cut down on carbs, but I love them & my bagels say no cholesterol?
I know more fruits & vegetables, grains & etc. I changed my pasta to whole wheat, my bread has always been whole wheat & oatmeal w/ fruit. I don't like cheerios or cold cereal in general.
So do carbs have anything to do with my cholesterol? What I'm getting from the answers are that fruits & veggies are good. Pick whole wheat pastas, breads & etc. Margarine vs. butter, nuts, chicken & turkey vs. red meat.
Just make sure you pay attention to the no saturated and trans fat rule. When your cooking use Canola oil or a no cholesterol spray. Buy a heart healthy no cholesterol margarine instead of butter. Get some Omega 3 vitamins and take one a day.
Some foods that can actually lower the cholesterol are:
Oatmeal, Cheerios
Whole grains (choose whole grain breads and bagels)
Salmon
Tomatoes
Apples (all fruits are fine, but the pectin in apples actually help lower cholesterol)
Beans (all kinds, foods high in fiber)
Nuts (pecans, pistachios, walnuts)
Blueberries
Artichoke
Peanut butter (high in Omega 3. Have some on whole wheat toast in the am)
* Stay away from the high-glucose carbs:
Refined sugar and sugary foods
White rice
Pasta (chose whole wheat pastas)
White bread
Whole milk, sour cream
Processed foods
