cannot really say without an exam. of course it could be just bruised/irritated but an infection would seem more likely. While penicillan is sometimes a good drug for needle infections, the most common germ (STAPH) almost always is resistant to penicillan and is mostly susceptible to staph resistant penicillan (methacillan) or cipro or bactrim or tetracycline. There are some staph resistant to each (methicillan resistant staph aureus... MRSA sounds so much better than BRSA or TRSA) and infections will require attention pretty quick and antibiotic treatment.
