What Is Chostrochondritis ? Please Advise

I m 14 and I have had differing chest pains for a few years. Last year they sort of disappeared but in the past week, they ve come back. The pains differ; from sharp stabbing pains, to long aches and a lot in between, but they all seem to centre around the chest and arm area. Lately I have had a constricting pain across the middle of my chest, which is really quite painful. It hurts a bit more when I breathe in. I also had this pain in my shoulder a few days ago. I read on the internet about something called chostrochondritis, which is a common cause of chest pain in teenagers. Is this that? I m scared because I don t know if it is cardiac. Also, could it just be growing pains, as my parents suggest ? Please help, I m worried. Thanks.

It does sound like chostrochondritis which is minor inflammation involving the little intercostal muscles and cartilage between your ribs. It is very common in kids your age. The pain can occur at any time and usually is sharp and hurts worse if you try to take a deep breath in. It is somehing you will grow out of. However if the pain occurs when you exercise and it is crushing in nature or if you ever pass out when exercising then you should definitely go see your doctor. If you are still nervous and your parents have good insurance go see your doctor and get an EKG and echocardiogram for peace of mind. They will most likely be normal and give you reassurance.
