Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father is 96 years old, in assisted living. He has a heart condition that makes it hard to get enough oxygen in his system which they say causes irritability. He has lately been very combative to the point of hitting his caregivers. His doctor has put him on 125 mg sprinkles of divalproex 2x/day. some people have reported that he spends an inordinate amount of time sleeping. Is this an appropriate usage for this medicine?
The dosage is based on the weight, medical condition, response to the treatment. If you observe any side effects to the medicine you should keep the doctor informed.
This medicine has to be withdrawn gradually. Consult the treating doctor, do not stop the medicine on your own.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
