Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data: age, exact diagnosis, presence of associated medical illness if any and the duration of treatment not mentioned.
Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid.
It is prescribed to treat many inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, lupus, psoriasis,
ulcerative colitis, allergic disorders, gland (endocrine) disorders, and conditions that affect the skin, eyes, lungs, intestines, nervous system, or blood cells.
The emergency room doctor has prescribed Medrol Dosepak which is available in the form of tablet. For painful joints (
inflammatory arthritis like
rheumatoid arthritis) the usual intitial dose is 4 mg to be taken in the morning after having food.
Since it is known to cause acidity related stomach problems like gastritis or ulcer, she also needs to take either Ranitidine or a
proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole along with Medrol Dosepak. The dose can be adjusted depending upon the response by the treating doctor.
Remember Medrol Dosepak should be taken only for shorter intervals. Its long term use has a high risk of causing serious adverse effects like weight gain, high BP, high blood glucose level, cataract,
peptic ulcer, thinning of the bones, opportunistic infections, etc. on long term use.
Hope this answers your query.
