What Is A Discolored Hard Knot And Numbness In Ankle Post An Injury Suggestive Of?

Three weeks ago my 13-year-old son was hit above the ankle by a baseball. It swelled and bruised, but after the color faded it is still a hard knot with some light red color, and he says it s numb. The knot has the diameter of a quarter. Should we be concerned?

Hello.

This may be a hematoma--a pool of blood under the skin--and, if so, that will get absorbed in time.

That said, he needs an x-ray of the ankle just to make sure there's no fracture involved
