What Is An Alternative Contraceptive Method Other Than Copper T?

Hi
I am Shelly Bhatia, 30 years old and have 2 children, Married for the last ten years
I had a IUD device inserted about 2 years ago and have been told it has a ten year life
I am getting anemic and my HB count is low ( 10 )
also I am getting irregular periods, which are also unpredictable
I have also started getting lower back pain
My husband could not care less and does not want me to get rid of the device,
Is there any other safe methods of contraception
are there any other potential harmful effects of continuing with the Copper T

Thanks

Hi,

Usually some amount of menstrual irregularities can be expected while using IUCD. And these will generally subside in early months. As the problem is persisting in your case, which is also leading to anemia, backache etc, better option is removal of IUCD after discussing with your doctor. If you want to continue, the possible risks are continuation of menstrual irregularities and pelvic infection.

Before taking the decision of continuation you have to rule out local causes like pelvic infection with cervical erosion, which can present with spotting. Pap smear to be taken. If test is normal, to control the irregular bleeding you can use anti fibrinolytic drugs like tranexamic acid.

If problem still persists you may have to choose other methods like:
Hormonal contraceptives: Combined hormonal pills, progesterone only pills, progesterone injection or progesterone containing IUCD (this is expensive compared with regular IUCD).
Barrier contraceptives like condoms etc.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
