Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
when the doctor prescribed Lamitical, I thought I found the perfect medication for me, that is until Igot Stevens Johnson syndrome. So my First question is , 1) Could this possibly mean I m bipolar? 2) Is there an alternative medication that is comparable to Lamitical, that I could take? And one with out a lot of the side effects, especially severe weight gain, etc. Thank you
Hi It would have been great if you had mentioned why you were prescribed Lamictal (Lamotrigine) in the first place. Lamictal is used in the maintenance of bipolar disorder and also certain seizure disorders. Now coming to your question. 1) Getting an adverse reaction like Steven Johnson Syndrome simply means that you are allergic to that drug. This does not mean you are bipolar. Bipolar illness is diagnosed clinically. 2) There are alternatives to Lamictal that may not cause severe weight gain. But the choice of drug depends on the indication for which you were on Lamictal. Alternatives like carbamazepine or gabapentin can be used. You can discuss the above points with your consulting doctor and further resolve your queries. Hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcare magic.
