What Is Correlation Between High Bilirubin Levels & Alpha One?
A doctor recently suggested I may have Gilbert's Syndrome due to my high indirect bilirubin levels. My 59 year old mom, who has never tried a cigarette in her life, had to have surgery yesterday to remove portions of her lungs that the pathologist suspects is damaged by emphysema. We are waiting for blood test results on whether or not she has Alpha One. Is there a correlation between high indirect bilirubin levels and Alpha One? All my other liver enzymes where normal.
Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency is a disease which runs in the family. It affects mostly liver, gut and lungs. In luver it will cause indirect hyper billirubin and in lungs it will cause emphysema. Since your mother is having severe emphysema and you have indirect hyper billirubin doctor want to rule out alpha one antitrypsin deficiency in the family.
