What Is Lymphadenitis?

Hi, my daughter was having pains on the left side of her abdomen going towards her groin with vomiting. The doctor suspected kidney stones and advised an ultrasound. The USG showed a renal calculi of 3.1mm in the left kidney with hydronephrosis. A CT scan was then advised. However, the CT scan does not show any calculi nor hydronephrosis. It says that the mesenteric lymph nodes are enlarged and impression is lymphadenitis. What is this? How do we proceed? please advise. she s had no pains since the last time (4 days ago) and seems fine.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Any infection in the intestines will cause swelling of lymph nodes draining that area which is call LYMPHADENITIS. Usually they are acute infections due to food contamination. sometimes chronic infections like Tuberculosis can also cause mesenteric adenitis, though infections are not the sole causes. your physician may try a course of antibiotics, the response to which will decide the need for further evaluation. I would recommend a phycisian's consultation. she should be fine soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
