What Is Purpose Of Using Cage For Prolapsed Disc?

Hi, ive just been told I need to have discectomy and fusion because of prolapsed disc at c6/c7 - the surgeon mentioned using a cage - what is the purpose of this and can normal activities be resumed following successful surgery or does loss of a disc cause restrictions.
