What Is Severe Pain Behind The Left Knee Suggestive Of?

i have pain behind my left knee. It mainly starts hurting toward the end of the work day (on my feet all day) and when I go down the steps. Don t know what I did to cause it, but it s been hurting off and on for a few months now. Today was the worst it s been.
