What Is The MRI Report Of My Child Suggestive Of?

Hi Doctor, my daughter 2 year 9 months had MRI 2 days bachik and report says symmetrical T2W hyperintensities in bilateral tegmental tracts. Sub cortical white matter of bilateral cerebral hemispheres is not myelinated on T2W images with mild thinning of corpus collosum delayed myelination likely. As compared to previous MRI of 2014, there is a further progression of myelination with persistance of unmyelinated subcortical white matter of bilateral cerebral hemispheres. Please suggest what this report says and what we need to do next. She also has delay in milestones. She is walking however not talking clear word yet.

Hi,

You have described Clinical symptoms and MRI findings which suggestive of (IDD) idiopathic developmental delay. Delayed acquisition of developmental motor and cognitive milestones is a common clinical expression of many etiological processes. MRI studies increasingly suggest that white matter myelination finely reflects the progression in functional brain maturation.

IDD is defined as psychomotor retardation without a clear cause on the basis of history, physical, genetic, metabolic, and neuro-imaging examinations. Hence it is important to look for possible corrective etiology for this. Developmental quotients (DQs) can be calculated for all children with IDD on the basis of clinical history, examination, and psychometric testing. I suggest you should visit your physician possibly a pediatric neurologist. Take guidance for same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
