What Is The Black Spot On The Face Which Came Overnight?

My husband had a small, purple/black spot appear on his face seemingly overnight. He is 59 years old and the spot is about a quarter of an inch in size. Could it be a broken capillary? His father had melanoma and I m very concerned this could be the same, although I don t think it would appear overnight. Any information you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

In melanoma, a pre-existing mole will change in shape, color and increase in size. This can be a benign condition, if resolution occurs on its own. If not biopsy would help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shunmadhi S., Dermatologist
