What Is The Cause And The Cure For The Loss Of Sense Of Taste?

My mother has lost all sense of taste. She has seen a doctor that told her that this sometimes happens as we age, and that it occurs to 1 out of 6 women. I find this hard to believe. It seems crazy that she has to just live eating bland foods for the rest of her life. There must be a cause and/or a cure. She is 74 years old and otherwise very healthy.
