What Is The Cause And Treatment For Insomnia?

I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING HORRIBLE INSOMIA FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS, NOT EVERY NIGHT BUT AT LEAST THREE OR TIMES A WEEK. MY DOCTOR HAD PRESCRIBED TRAZADONE 100MG AT NIGHT. THAT SEEMED TO WORK FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN I WOULD WAKE UP AT 3 OR 4 IN THE MORNING NOT BEING ABLE TO GO BACK TO SLEEP. HE THEN PRESCRIBED THE GENERIC FOR AMBIEN AND IT WORKED FOR 2 TO 3 WEEKS VERY WELL AND NOW I M WAKING UP AT THE 3 OR 4 HOUR OF THE MORNING MY FRIEND SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE BOTH THE TRAZADONE AND AMBIEN AT THE SAME TIME AND I WOULD GET THE RESULTS HE DID WHEN HE DID THE SAME THING. MY CONCERN IS THAT I DRINK A HALF PINT OF VODKA BETWEEN 3PM AND BEDTIME WHICH IS MIDNIGHT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS MAY CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS. MY DOCTOR HAS MADE SEVERAL LIFE CHANGING SUGGESTIONS WHICH I READ IN READERS DIGEST SOME TIME AGO. I TRY TO PRACTICE ALL OF THEM. WHEN I WAS IN THE NAVY I WAS TOLD THAT NOBODY EVER DIED OF LACK OF SLEEP. I DISAGREE

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

You have severe insomnia and are advised to take Trazodon 100 mg per day which worked for few days then you again started waking up at about 3 am in morning. The Ambien or Zolpidem was advised. Zolpidem is hypnotic drug and it helps in good sleep. The drug also resulted in improvement for only few days. One of common reason that causes insomnia is poor sleep hygiene. I would advise you to improve sleep hygiene.

- Fix your time to go to sleep and don't remain awake in night.
- Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol in evening.
- Use your bed for sleeping only and don't watch TV or read from bed.
- Light exercise in evening also helps in getting good sleep.
- Don't think about not sleeping again and again. This increases the risk of insomnia.
- Light exercise also helps in sleep.

If condition doesnt improve with improvement of sleep hygiene then consult a psychiatrist for medicines. Medicines like Ramelteon can help to improve sleep.
