What Is The Cause And Treatment For Jaw And Ear Pain?

I went to the doctor yesterday for intense pain in my left jaw and ear and swelling in that area. I was put on antibiotics for cellulitis, but I don t believe it is because my skin isn t red or anything. The pain in my jaw becomes almost unbearable when I drink or eat anything sour. I am wondering if it could be a salivary gland. I ve been on Adipex for 2 months for weight loss and it does give me a dry mouth. I am going to follow up with a dentist, but I don t think it s a tooth issue either. Also, this started about 24 hours after using a waterpik for the first time and I wondered if it could be related to that as well.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern....

As per your complain pain in jaw and ear and swelling in front of ear and increase in pain on taking anything sour clearly indicates that you have clogged duct of the Parotid gland which is a major salivary gland and due to clogged duct the saliva is unable to flow into mouth and there is backflow of saliva into the gland leading to its expansion and severe pain when the gland expands..
As the sour foods tends to stimulate saliva flow and as the saliva flow rapidly increases there must be definitely expansion in gland and pain..
You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and at times if there is something obstructing the opening of the duct it can be removed manually..
Deeper obstructions caused by Salivary stones or Sialoliths formed by minerals present in saliva can be removed surgically..
A technique known as Sialoscopy which is an endoscopic technique to rule out deeper located stones can be employed by an oral surgeon for locating and removing the stones...

Hope this information helps..
