What Is The Cause And Treatment For Severe Cough?

Hi i have a question. My husband has a horrible cough. Hes had it for a week now and it doesnt seem to get better. He spits out phlegms. And his chest hurts from coughing so much. Hes always cold when im sweating hot. His tried so many medicines but none seem to help. And could he get pneumonia from this.
