What Is The Cause For Loss Of Appetite?

Hello Dr. Grief, I have increasingly been losing my appetite over the last few months--have lost some weight--and sometimes have an aversion to food or have my gag reflex kick in. Any suggestions for restarting my appetite and eliminating the impulse to gag? RB

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

From your current information it is clear that you have lack of appetite. Appetite can be reduced due to several common reasons like (In your age group):

*Medical reasons: Worm infestation, Hormonal imbalance (hypothyroidism), acidity, vitamin deficiency, chronic illness

*Psychological reasons: Depression, Eating disorder

You may need certain laboratory test like: Serum TSH, Complete blood count, Liver function test, Stool examination (for worm infestation), upper GI endoscopy (if acidity is suspected).

In your case lack of appetite is associated with gag, which make upper gastro intestinal cause more probable, specially acidity. It need to rule out first in your case.

Wish you good health and all the best.
