husband has sleep apnea and mild to mod copd--had been using cpap for years without any pulmonary problems. after another follow-up sleep study it was determined he also had central apnea. Last Dec was switched to bpap machine and since then he has had 2 severe episodes of wheezing. First time treated with z-pak advair and spiriva and problem resolved. This time didn't see MD soon enough-started on z-pak,sliding scale prednisone, advair and spiriva. Finished z-pak-was tapering down to 20mg prednisone, wheezing was somewhat better and spiked a fever and had to be admitted to hosp on IV Levaquin. Wondering if bpap could be causing these new lung problems.
Hi, Bipap does not lead to wheezing. He just had an exacerbation of COPD which normaly gets well in about a couple of weeks. You need to continue the medications for COPD. If humidifier is used with bipap machine, do clean it regularly. Regards Dr. Mishra
