What Is The Cause Of A Tapping Noise In The Ear?

I have a tapping noise in my right ear on and off for the past two months .The frequency is about 170 beats per minute. It has now been constant for the past 24 hours. I seen my Doctor who examined my ear and found that everything seemed normal. What could be the cause. I have had a lot of worry over this past two months but that has been resolved.
