What Is The Cause Of Elevated Pulse Rate When Exercising And Chest Pressure?
Am 72 year old male, active with tennis, walking. Just got weened off atenolol onto losartan.50mg. Blood pressure readings good, but pulse rate in 70 s, resting, and goes to 80 s when busy. When doing mild machine exercise or playing tennis, it elevates to 96,97 etc. Feel pressure in chest and sometimes light faint. Was better with 25mg which had heart rate in 60 s. Atenolol had it in the 40 s. Awaiting for some answers.
Infectious Diseases Specialist, Dr. Praveen G's Response
Hello, Welcome to HCM, As per your history, previously you were taking Atenolol, which is a beta-blocker group of drugs. These groups of drugs decrease the pulse rate. As you were shifted to Losartan-ACE inhibitor group of drugs which does not decrease the heart rate as atenolol, so your pulse rate is relatively high compared to previous values. It is not evident in your history why you have been shifted from atenolol to losartan. Feeling pressure in the chest may be due to increased pulse rate. If your symptoms exacerbate,i would suggest you to do an ECG for evaluation. Thank you.
